RUSS & DAUGHTERS 6TH ANNUAL 2ND SEDER: VIRTUAL SEDER

This year our 6th Annual 2nd Seder was virtual, and we were honored to be joined by so many friends, family, customers, and guests from all over the world. Although we were physically distanced, it was joyful and meaningful to come together virtually to share in the celebration of the Passover Seder, and to raise funds for our staff that are out of work. Thank you for joining us, for letting us into your homes, for visiting our homes, and for being together to celebrate and support the community.

The program was hosted by Rabbi Andy Bachman and the Russ family, with special guests Andy Nyman, Elvis Costello & Diana Krall, friends and family, and more. With musical guests Lorin Sklamberg (of The Klezmatics) and Alex Weiser (of YIVO).

For 106 years, whatever challenges New York, New Yorkers, and the country as a whole have weathered, Russ & Daughters has weathered them with you and because of you. It is one of our deepest joys and highest obligations to be a bedrock of continuity for our community. We will get through this too because we plan on being here for you for another 106 years.

We are honored to celebrate with you -- our extended family and community -- this very special virtual Passover seder. Although the 2nd night is past, we hope you’ll join us and enjoy.

All proceeds will go to support Russ & Daughters employees who are not currently able to work. We appreciate you donating any amount that you can.

Thank you for being part of our family and our traditions.

Join us for one of our favorite annual traditions: The 2nd Seder at Russ & Daughters Cafe! Passover is a time when we gather with family, friends, and community to tell the story, sing the songs, and eat the meal of the holiday. It’s also a time to reflect on how historical issues of social justice and freedom relate to our lives today. The conduit for these stories and conversations is food and ritual.

Russ & Daughters has been a part of people’s Passover seders for generations: we’ve always prepared Passover specialties for pick-up, delivery, and shipping to our customers in their homes. And while we’ll be doing that this year, we always look forward to welcoming people into our own space to celebrate.

Every year we invite friends of the Russ & Daughters family to lend their unique voice and talents to lead our seder. The Russ family is thrilled to have Andy Bachman as our host this year. Andy Bachman is a rabbi and community leader who has served communities in Brooklyn and at New York University during his career. He is now serving as Executive DIrector of the Jewish Community Project Downtown. Alex Weiser is a composer who creates acutely cosmopolitan music combining a deeply felt historical perspective with a vibrant forward-looking creativity, and he is also Director of Public Programs at the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research where he curates and produces programs.

State Senator Daniel Squadron introduced a resolution that was unanimously passed by the New York State Senate “Commending Russ and Daughters upon the occasion of celebrating its 100th Anniversary.”

On January 7, State Senator Daniel Squadron presented his Senate resolution celebrating the 100th Anniversary of Russ & Daughters to Niki Russ Federman and Josh Russ Tupper, fourth generation members of the Russ family and current proprietors of Russ & Daughters and Russ & Daughters Cafe.

Senator Squadron’s resolution unanimously passed the New York State Senate on June 20, 2014.

“For 100 years, Russ and Daughters has been a focal point of the Lower East Side, providing nosh after great nosh since 1914,” said State Senator Daniel Squadron. “Whether enjoying my favorite fish and bagel creation or any of its great comfort food, there’s just no place like Russ & Daughters. I’m so happy to join Niki Russ Federman, Josh Russ Tupper, and the entire staff of Russ & Daughters to celebrate its 100th Anniversary."

“We are very proud and pleased to be an important part of people's connection to their past and to maintain traditions in a landscape where many traditions are being forgotten,” said Josh Russ Tupper. “Russ & Daughters has managed not only to stay in business for 100 years and under the stewardship of one family, but over time it has become an icon of our city and anchor for countless New Yorkers,” said Niki Russ Federman. “We are humbled to be recognized for this achievement by Senator Squadron, a tireless champion of the Lower East Side, small business, and important New York issues. We are proud to receive this honor alongside our entire staff, many of whom have been a part of Russ & Daughters for 20, 30, even 40 years of our 100 year history. 101 YEARS YOUNG

After 100 years, it was time to give you a place to sit! Niki Russ Federman and Josh Russ Tupper - 4th Generation Owners of Russ & Daughters - opened the Russ & Daughters Cafe at 127 Orchard Street in May 2014, the very street where their great grandfather, Joel Russ, founded the business - first out of a herring barrel, then a pushcart, and later a small shop -- before moving to the shop's current location on Houston Street. That the Russ & Daughters Cafe would be built a century later on Orchard Street, where it all began, is certainly bashert! ("Bashert" is a Yiddish word that means "meant to be.")
