Announcing THE stone SERIES: Curated by John Zorn. Music Nights at Russ & Daughters Cafe.

Russ & Daughters Cafe presents monthly musical performances from some of the very best jazz musicians in the downtown scene. For 2017, The Stone Series of music nights was curated by John Zorn.

Music has been an integral part of the restaurant's experience since it opened in 2014, and it is a distinct honor to welcome some of our favorite musicians.

Russ & Daughters Cafe is located at 127 Orchard Street, between Rivington and Delancey. The music series is free, and there will be nosh and cocktail specials available in addition to our regular menu. Each musician will play one set, at 8PM.

Join us for our now-annual tradition: The 2nd Annual 2nd Seder at Russ & Daughters Cafe! Former spiritual leader at Congregation Beth Elohim in Brooklyn, and current Scholar in Residence at the 92nd St Y, Andy Bachman will lead an intimate second seder at Russ & Daughters Cafe in the Lower East Side. Renowned for his contemporary approach to spiritual practice as well as his commitment to community engagement and social activism, the Second Annual Second Seder at Russ & Daughters Cafe promises to be an unforgettable and engaging evening of storytelling, song, and of course, delicious Passover classics.  Joining Andy will be the remarkable singer/songwriter of Brooklyn band Barbez, Dan Kaufman, whose work has been described as “a haunting mosaic of avant-rock, old-world cabaret, Eastern European folksong, and contemporary classical into a uniquely beautiful and personal soundscape.”

Passover is a time when we gather together with family, friends, and community to tell the story and sing the songs of the holiday. It’s a time to reflect on how historical issues of social justice and freedom relate to our lives today. The conduit for these stories and conversations is food and ritual.

Russ & Daughters has been a part of people’s Passover seders for generations: we’ve always prepared Passover specialties for pick-up, delivery, and shipping to our customers in their homes. And while we’ll be doing that this year at the shop, we’re also looking forward to welcoming people into our own space to celebrate.

A portion of the proceeds from every ticket will be donated to the Henry Street Settlement.  Founded in 1893 by social work and public health pioneer Lillian Wald and based on Manhattan's Lower East Side, Henry Street Settlement delivers a wide range of social service, arts and health care programs to more than 50,000 New Yorkers each year. Distinguished by a profound connection to its neighbors, a willingness to address new problems with swift and innovative solutions, and a strong record of accomplishment, Henry Street challenges the effects of urban poverty by helping families achieve better lives for themselves and their children.

Did you know that you can rent the Russ & Daughters Cafe for private events?

Sasha and Dan tied the knot at the Russ & Daughters Cafe and celebrated with their nearest and dearest family and friends! Their wedding ceremony was conducted right in the dining room - underneath a beautiful chuppah (wedding canopy) made with branches and family prayer shawls. Guests joined the couple for cocktails, noshes, a buffet dinner, and dancing.

State Senator Daniel Squadron introduced a resolution that was unanimously passed by the New York State Senate “Commending Russ and Daughters upon the occasion of celebrating its 100th Anniversary.”

On January 7, State Senator Daniel Squadron presented his Senate resolution celebrating the 100th Anniversary of Russ & Daughters to Niki Russ Federman and Josh Russ Tupper, fourth generation members of the Russ family and current proprietors of Russ & Daughters and Russ & Daughters Cafe.

Senator Squadron’s resolution unanimously passed the New York State Senate on June 20, 2014.

“For 100 years, Russ and Daughters has been a focal point of the Lower East Side, providing nosh after great nosh since 1914,” said State Senator Daniel Squadron. “Whether enjoying my favorite fish and bagel creation or any of its great comfort food, there’s just no place like Russ & Daughters. I’m so happy to join Niki Russ Federman, Josh Russ Tupper, and the entire staff of Russ & Daughters to celebrate its 100th Anniversary."

“We are very proud and pleased to be an important part of people's connection to their past and to maintain traditions in a landscape where many traditions are being forgotten,” said Josh Russ Tupper. “Russ & Daughters has managed not only to stay in business for 100 years and under the stewardship of one family, but over time it has become an icon of our city and anchor for countless New Yorkers,” said Niki Russ Federman. “We are humbled to be recognized for this achievement by Senator Squadron, a tireless champion of the Lower East Side, small business, and important New York issues. We are proud to receive this honor alongside our entire staff, many of whom have been a part of Russ & Daughters for 20, 30, even 40 years of our 100 year history. We now look forward to the next 100 years.”

Here is the complete text of the resolution:

Commending Russ and Daughters upon the occasion of celebrating its 100th Anniversary

LEGISLATIVE  RESOLUTION  commending Russ and Daughters upon the occasion
of celebrating its 100th Anniversary
WHEREAS, It is the sense of this Legislative Body to recognize illustrious culinary establishments which have positively impacted and  substantially contributed to the vitality of their communities; and
WHEREAS,  Attendant to such concern, and in full accord with its long-standing traditions, this Legislative Body is justly  proud  to  commend
Russ  and  Daughters upon the occasion of celebrating its 100th Anniversary; and
WHEREAS, Russ and Daughters first opened in 1914, and from the  beginning,  served  as  a focal point for the immigrant neighborhood that has been the starting place for generations of Americans; and

WHEREAS, This esteemed New York institution was founded by Joel Russ, an  Eastern  European immigrant who arrived in America in 1907; he began selling pickled herring and Polish mushrooms out of a pushcart to  cater to  the  large  numbers  of Jewish immigrants settling in the Lower East Side of New York; and
WHEREAS, In 1914, Joel Russ opened J Russ National Appetizers, at
a storefront around the corner from the current  location,  beginning  a
tradition of excellence that would endure to the present day; and
WHEREAS,  In 1933, the business was renamed "Russ and Daughters" after Joel Russ made his three daughters, Hattie, Ida and Anne, partners  in the  store;  historically,  businesses only took on the name "and sons", but since Joel Russ only had daughters, the store forged  ahead  in  its own unique way; and
WHEREAS,  Over  the years, Russ and Daughters became renowned and much beloved for their wonderful offerings and delicious menu items; throughout this time it has served as a  gathering  place  for generations  of Jewish and non-Jewish customers seeking a great nosh; and
WHEREAS,  In  2009,  a fourth generation of the Russ family officially
took the helm at the venerable shop; Niki  Russ  Federman,  daughter of former  owner  Mark Russ Federman, and her cousin Josh Russ Tupper, have admirably carried on the legacy of their forebears after  discovering  a passion for the family business while working in other careers; and

WHEREAS, Russ and Daughters has been featured in the PBS documentary, "The  Jews  of  New  York,"  highlighting  the contributions of multiple generations of the Russ Family during the past century; furthermore,  it has also been featured in the movie, "Lola Versus", and on an episode of the TV series "Louie"; and

yet another century with the opening of the Russ and Daughters Cafe on Orchard Street on the Lower East Side; and
WHEREAS, It is with great pleasure that this Legislative Body acknowl-
edges  this  exceptional business and its contributions to the local and
state economies, fully confident that it  will  continue  to  enjoy  the
successes it has experienced thus far; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED,  That  this  Legislative  Body pause in its deliberations to
commend Russ and Daughters upon the occasion of  celebrating  its 100th Anniversary; and be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution, suitably engrossed, be transmitted to Russ and Daughters.

After 100 years, it was time to give you a place to sit! Niki Russ Federman and Josh Russ Tupper - 4th Generation Owners of Russ & Daughters - opened the Russ & Daughters Cafe at 127 Orchard Street in May 2014, the very street where their great grandfather, Joel Russ, founded the business - first out of a herring barrel, then a pushcart, and later a small shop -- before moving to the shop's current location on Houston Street. That the Russ & Daughters Cafe would be built a century later on Orchard Street, where it all began, is certainly bashert! ("Bashert" is a Yiddish word that means "meant to be.")

some text

Now, after a century on the Lower East Side, Russ & Daughters is proud to celebrate the 101st anniversary of Russ & Daughters as well as the 1st anniversary of the Russ & Daughters Cafe. Come visit us and be part of history at both locations!

After 100 years of helping our customers celebrate holidays in their own homes, we were thrilled, this year, to host The First Annual Second Seder at Russ & Daughters Cafe. Laurie Anderson, a longtime customer and friend, presided over the seder and presented a mix of traditions -- new and old. Laurie incorporated beautiful music and stunning storytelling to make a truly magical night.

We served a meal that included noshes - Hot Smoke/Cold Smoke, Chopped Liver, Sours; Matzo Ball Soup, Salmon & Whitefish Gefilte Fish, and Brisket. For dessert: flourless chocolate cake and almond macaroon cookies. We even had some special cocktails for the occasion: Karpas (horseradish-infused potato vodka, cointreau, lemon juice, parsley); Maror (horseradish-infused potato vodka, vermouth, formula antica, angostura bitters, baby beets); Charoset (Bulleit bourbon, House-made apple & cinnamon syrup, lemon juice, manzanilla sherry).

And, of course, a complete seder plate, as pictured above!

Laurie curated a group of fantastic performers and participants who presented each part of the seder through beautiful stories and song. We were lucky to be joined by Suzanne Vega, Judith Berkson, Annie Ohayon, Roma Baran, Basya Schecter, and Paul Mills -- all of whom shared their own personal interpretation of the parts of the seder.

A portion of the proceeds from every ticket was donated to Educational Alliance. based on the Lower East Side for 125 years, Educational Alliance has been an essential NYC resource, providing services to more than 50,000 New Yorkers annually.

A highlight of the evening was Suzanne Vega's performance of Russ & Daughters Diner/Tom's Diner.

Below, the Russ & Daughters seder plate, as seen on every table.

Replacing the traditional seder plate with kraft placemats enabled us to identify its parts in both Hebrew and English.

Every part of the seder was truly special. A unique and once-in-a-lifetime gathering of friends and family to start a whole new tradition, based on something so old.

A Very Lower East Side Jewish Christmas With Mission Chinese Food And Russ & Daughters Cafe

Russ & Daughters is always busy on Christmas - customers have traditionally ordered gifts for nationwide shipping and delivery in NYC, have picked out fish for The Feast of the Seven Fishes, have dined on bagels and lox under the tree, and have picked up snacks to sneak into movie theaters! This year, since we finally have a restaurant, we wanted to do something fun with some of our local friends: Danny Bowien and the team Mission Chinese Food. We worked together to present a family-style dinner feast of Mission Chinese Food favorites and appetizing Russ & Daughters twists. A joyous time was had by all!

A portion of each ticket was donated to Henry Street Settlement  - which opens doors of opportunity to enrich lives and enhance human progress for Lower East Side residents and other New Yorkers through social services, arts, and health care programs.
